MUSIC FROM THE MELTING POT: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE MOUNTAIN DULCIMER
A talk by Professor David E. Thornton (HIST)

The little-known stringed instrument called the Mountain or Appalachian Dulcimer probably developed in the Appalachian mountain region of the United States around 1800 and is considered by some to be the only uniquely U.S. folk instrument. This presentation will describe the main features of the mountain dulcimer, consider its origins and early history, and assess its place in American folk culture today.

The talk will include images and video clips, and the speaker will also play his dulcimers during the presentation.
