Craig Ireland received his Ph.D. in Théorie et Épistémologie de la Littérature from the Université de Montréal and his BA from U.C. Berkeley. Before coming to Bilkent, he was a SSHRCC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada) Postdoctoral Fellow and taught for the philosophy and comparative literature departments at the Université de Montréal.

Dr. Ireland’s research and teaching interests are interdisciplinary and include literary, aesthetic and social theory, Western Marxism, Koselleckian Begriffsgeschichte, Luhmanian Systemstheorie and eighteenth- to twentieth-century European and North American intellectual, economic and cultural history. His first book, The Subaltern Appeal to Experience: Self-Identity, Late Modernity and the Politics of Immediacy (Montréal and Kingston: McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2004; paperback edition, 2005) addresses the socio-historical and economic origin of recent North-American and Western European trends in identity politics. Dr Ireland is working on a second book, Securing the Present: From the Climate of Insecurity to a Culture of Immediacy, co-authored with Dr. David Carvounas (Political Philosophy, University of Toronto). This interdisciplinary work, still in progress, deals with the effects of economic precariousness on Western European and North American cultural practices from the seventeenth century to the present.

In his spare time, Craig Ireland likes to visit his family in Lausanne, Switzerland and his close friends and like-minded colleagues in Europe, Turkey, Canada and Cuba.
